1. The road itself, eventually 700 miles long, bore the name of Gnaios Egnatios, the Roman proconsul who commissioned its construction. Begun in 146 BC, when completed in 120 BC it ran from Byzantium in the east to Dyrrachium in the west.

2. Writing near the end of the first century AD, the writer of 1 Clement reports that Paul wore chains on seven occasions. This claim, however, almost assuredly has more to do with numerical symbolism (the number seven signaling completion or perfection) than with actual history.
